10 tips for successful breastfeeding

Here are my top 10 tips to get breastfeeding off to a great start!

  1. Bring your baby to your breast in the first hour. Even better, let your baby find your breast by doing the Breast Crawl.

2. Skin to skin around the clock. For the first week or two or whenever your baby is unsettled.

3. Work on getting a deep latch. If you are unsure or if it feels wrong, start again. Don’t settle for an average latch.

4. Stay well hydrated and nourished. Eat and drink mama!

5. Rest. Rest rest rest as much as you can. Don’t over-do it in the early days.

6. Feed on demand. At first sign, feed your baby. Don’t wait until baby cries, look for the first cues.

7. Check for ties! Tongue and Lip ties are so common and can bring you all kinds of trouble. Get your baby checked by a professional, such as a IBCLC.

8. No dummy to start with. If your baby needs comfort, comfort your baby with YOU.

9. Learn about breastfeeding! Take classes, listen to podcasts and read books.

10. Surround yourself with support. Trustworthy, caring support.

If you have any issues or find breast-feeding hard or hurts, reach out for help.

You are doing amazing mama feeding your baby!
